These Study Guides are for grades 8 to 12.
When choosing a novel study there are a few things to consider. In the first place a novel was written to be read and enjoyed. If you do a novel study on a book the child is reading for the first time chances are likely that the child will come to dislike the book. I, therefore, recommend you pick a novel that the child has already read and enjoyed. Secondly you typically pick a novel that is somewhat below the student's reading level. In a novel study, besides learning literary devices, the student will be required to consider social and other issues. These are often of a more mature nature than the reading level of the book. Feel free to pick a novel your child has read a year or even two or more years ago. As you do more novel studies you will know your child's level of comfort with some of the issues being dealt with and you can move closer to the actual reading level of your child.
