Singapore math has become increasingly popular among homeschoolers since recent international testing placed math students from Singapore at number one in the world. Singapore math is geared towards producing mathematical thinkers, and it does this by emphasizing understanding of mathematical concepts (rather than rote learning), mental math, and problem solving. Word problems force students to think and apply the concepts they have learned, so children develop the habit of looking for solutions in everyday math situations.
Please note: If you are coming to Singapore Math from another program, you can find placement tests at www.singaporemath.com to help you determine which level to start with. Don’t feel bad if you have to start with a lower level than you expected – Singapore is generally considered to be about a year ahead of American programs.
