Many homeschooling parents feel some insecurity when it comes to teaching math and many hope to instill in their children a love for this subject, realizing its importance. A good way to start down this road is to play games involving numbers and math concepts and to read stories with a mathematical theme or concept to young children. |
Story books can be found in the library by typing in "addition" or "fractions" or "circles" in the subject heading. Also the children's librarian can direct you to appropriate stories. By reading stories and doing the activities suggested the children will easily learn various concepts. A great book with ideas is Peggy Kaye's Games for Math.
If your children are in middle school or junior high and struggling with important math concepts you may wish to consider the Key to Series. There are also very helpful books using manipulatives and these can be found under the Hands-On Math Section.
With a positive attitude and diligence we can begin to change the attitude that math is either unnecessary or difficult. Make this a subject your children love to do! If you need some advice as what to do with your children feel free to call. Together we can hopefully find something that works for you and your children.
